ABSTRACT:

Because natural products have no known adverse effects as compared to medicines, they are becoming more and more valuable in clinical study. According to traditional ayurvedic literature, Tinospora cordifolia, often known as "Guduchi," has extensive use in the treatment of numerous ailments. Global interest in the plant has increased recently due to the identification of its active components and their biological role in illness prevention. In this review, we discuss our current research on (i) the genetic diversity of the plant and (ii) the biological relevance of the plant's separated active ingredients in disease targeting. The review's continued focus is on utilizing the biochemical and signaling pathways impacted by the substances extracted from Tinospora in order to facilitate novel and efficient formulation in the elimination of disease.

INTRODUCTION:

An Ayurvedic medication called Gaucho (Tinospora cord folia [Wild.] Mires.) is utilized in Rasayana Chikitsa.1 Rejuvenation therapy, or rasayan, is one of the most important subfields in Ayurveda.2 It is also referred to as Gurcha in Hindi, Amruthu in Malayalam, Amrutha balli in Kannada, Guduchi in Marathi and Sanskrit, etc. Anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-arthritic, antioxidant, anti-stress, antileprotic, antimalarial, hepatoprotective, antiallergic, and immunomodulatory effects are only a few of its many therapeutic qualities.3 Medicinal plants have been known to exist since the prehistoric era, and they are employed in conventional medical procedures.

Plant-derived chemicals are effective against bacteria, fungi, insects, and illnesses. Medicinal plants are commonly employed in non-industrialized countries because they are easily accessible, safe, and less expensive than modern medication. Of the 3,00,000 plant species that are recognized globally, only 5% have undergone scientific investigation for their therapeutic intent.4 This herb's extract inhibits kidney hypertrophy and polyuria both lessen kidney damage. Guduchi's aqueous extract has antidyslipidemic properties, while its alcoholic extract has antihyperglycemic properties.5 Guduchi is mentioned in Ayurvedic literature as an ingredient in a number of chemical formulations that are used to treat urinary tract infections, fever, dyspepsia, and general debility. The stem has a bitter stomachic effect, induces bile secretion, induces constipation, is a tonic, relieves fever, burning sensation, and thirst, prevents vomiting, is a diuretic, enriches the blood, treats jaundice, and is beneficial for skin conditions. The juice, on the other hand, is beneficial for diabetes, urethral and vaginal discharges, low fevers, and enlarged spleen, according to Ayurveda. As an antidote to scorpion stings and snake bites, the root and stem are recommended in combination with other medications. As a substitute and tonic, an infusion made from powdered stem has gained the reputation of being an aphrodisiac among ancient Hindu literature.
